WE ARE AT THE AGE . . . RETIREMENT?
We are at that age… Retirement?
It’s hard to believe we are here. I still feel like I’m 29 inside. No doubt our bodies hurt a bit more but our spirit is bright. This is our truth:
We are the oldest people at work. Our wisdom helps many.
We have reached our peak of our desired success in our job.
Burnout is kicking in.
Our friends are diagnosed with life threatening diseases or are retiring.
Parents are aging, needing more care and dying.
Kids/family move away to start their own family and jobs.
We are left with ourselves- looking inward and outward. Trying to find our new identity and build a new life. The questions arise:
What do I want to do?
How and when do I get out of this job?
Can I afford to retire?
Who do I want to surround myself with?
Will I even like being home without a job?
Where do I start?
It is scary. Believe me, we’ve been there. But we did it. We survived and even thrived.
Dreaming of what’s next is exciting. Pulling the trigger is life changing.
We retired a year ago. Marcy fully; me partially. We were 54 and 55 years old. Finding our “why” of doing this was really important in order to be sure of ourselves. It is what continues to keep us grounded when we question our decisions or are looking toward a new change. We realized that we aren’t getting any younger and we want to travel and explore while we still can. Retiring for us is about connection and adventure.
So many people wait until a magic number before they retire. It’s those golden handcuffs that keep us stuck and unfulfilled. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that. We did it too. Fortunately we decided to keep our number on the lower side. Security is important to many. I get it. However we sometimes forget to think out of the box. Look around. Talk to people. Take a risk. You can find a way to make your dream happen. Living in fear keeps us comfortable but does not always allow for forward movement.
After getting our van and traveling the states, we were living our dream. We felt happy and fulfilled. We were connecting with friends and family and meeting new people. We have seen places that we never thought we would. We have been checking off our bucket list. We were available to support Marcy’s dad when he was dying- sooo meaningful. The amount of memories we made will fill our lifetime. It has been worth the risk.
Remember, “you can always make more money but you can’t make more time.”
